Usage Note

Tramonto (from tramontare, to set/go beyond the mountains) also carries a figurative sense of decline: il tramonto di un'era ('the twilight of an era'). Its counterparts are alba (dawn) and sorgere del sole (sunrise). The adjective tramontato informally means 'past its prime' or 'out of fashion'. The expression al tramonto ('at sunset') is a poetic staple.
