Tremendo originally meant 'causing trembling' (from tremare, to tremble) but in modern Italian it is used colloquially both for something very bad (un caldo tremendo, a terrible heat) and hyperbolically for something very intense or impressive. Context determines the register. The adverb is tremendamente.
