vicissitudine

vicissitude

noun vee-chees-see-TOO-dee-neh Rare

Origin: From Latin vicissitudo (alternation, change).

hardship

Usage Note

Vicissitudine refers to an unexpected or difficult change of fortune. In Italian it is almost always used in the plural, vicissitudini, to describe a series of trials or ups and downs: le vicissitudini della vita ('life's vicissitudes'). Using the singular is grammatically fine but sounds more formal.

Examples

"Ha superato molte vicissitudini nella sua carriera."

Natural Translation

She has overcome many vicissitudes in her career.
