Usage Note
Vicissitudine refers to an unexpected or difficult change of fortune. In Italian it is almost always used in the plural, vicissitudini, to describe a series of trials or ups and downs: le vicissitudini della vita ('life's vicissitudes'). Using the singular is grammatically fine but sounds more formal.
