Usage Note

Ascesa denotes both a physical climb (l'ascesa alla cima = 'the ascent to the summit') and a metaphorical rise (l'ascesa al potere = 'the rise to power'). It is the noun corresponding to the verb ascendere. The opposite is discesa (descent). Plural: ascese.
