Assente functions as both adjective and noun (l'assente = the absent person). The phrase essere con la testa altrove is a common equivalent for the figurative sense of being mentally absent. Its opposite is presente. In school registers, assente marks a student as absent. Invariable in gender: il bambino assente, la bambina assente.
