banco

counter

noun BAHN-koh Rare

Also means

desk

Usage Note

Banco has two common senses: a counter or desk (in a shop, bank, or school — il banco del bar, il banco di scuola) and, in older or regional usage, a bank (now mainly banca). At a bar, you order al banco (standing at the counter) rather than at a table. The plural is regular: i banchi.

Natural Translation

The student opened the book at the desk.
