Usage Note
Biossido means dioxide — a compound containing two oxygen atoms. The most common use in Italian is biossido di carbonio (carbon dioxide, CO₂), though anidride carbonica is the more traditional Italian chemical term for CO₂. Biossido di azoto is nitrogen dioxide (NO₂). The word follows the Greek prefix bi- (two) + ossido (oxide).
