casino

mess

noun kah-ZEE-noh Rare

Origin: Diminutive of Italian casa (house).

Also means

brothel

Usage Note

Casino (with one 's') in everyday Italian almost always means a mess, racket, or chaotic situation — che casino! ('what a mess!'). This is completely different from the English 'casino' (gambling house), which in Italian is casinò (with a written accent on the final -ò). Its secondary meaning of 'brothel' is vulgar but historically documented. Be careful: dropping the accent changes the meaning entirely.

Examples

"In questa stanza è un vero casino!"
