caso

case

noun KAH-zoh Common

Also means

chance

Usage Note

Caso has two very different meanings in Italian: a 'case' or situation (in ogni caso = 'in any case') and pure chance or accident (per caso = 'by chance'). The plural casi is regular. A learner false friend: Italian caso can feel like English 'case' but never means a suitcase (valigia).

Examples

"In ogni caso, devi rispondere."

Natural Translation

In any case, you have to answer.
