collo

neck

noun KOHL-loh Rare

Origin: From Latin collum (neck).

Also means

collar

Usage Note

Collo primarily means the neck of a person or animal, but it also refers to the collar or neckline of a garment (collo alto = turtleneck). As a false-friend trap, English 'collar' is colletto, not collo. The idiom avere il fiato sul collo ('to have someone breathing down your neck') is very common.

Examples

"Mi fa male il collo."

Natural Translation

My neck hurts.

Literal Translation

To-me hurts the neck.
