Disabile functions as both noun and adjective and is the standard, respectful term in contemporary Italian — it replaced the older handicappato in official and everyday language. As a noun it is epicene: il disabile (m), la disabile (f). The plural is i disabili / le disabili. The adjective is likewise invariable for gender: una persona disabile.
