Disavanzo is a formal accounting and economics term for a deficit or shortfall — the opposite of avanzo (surplus). It is commonly used in discussions of public finance (disavanzo pubblico) and budget reporting. The plural is disavanzi. In everyday speech deficit (borrowed directly) is often preferred; disavanzo is the native Italian equivalent used in official documents.
