discendere
to descend
verb dee-SHEN-deh-reh Rare
Origin: From Latin descendere, from de- + scandere (to climb).
Also means
to be descended from
Usage Note
Discendere uses essere as its auxiliary when describing physical movement downward, and avere in some transitive uses. The sense 'to be descended from' always takes essere: discendo da una famiglia nobile. Do not confuse with scendere (to go down), which is more commonly used for everyday descents.
Examples
"Discendiamo da una lunga stirpe di artigiani."
Natural Translation
We descend from a long line of craftsmen.
