ebano
ebony
noun EH-bah-noh Rare
Origin: From Greek ebenos, via Latin hebenus.
Usage Note
Ebano is the dense black tropical hardwood prized for its colour and hardness. In Italian it is also used as a colour descriptor: nero come l'ebano (black as ebony). The phrase capelli d'ebano (ebony hair) is a literary image for jet-black hair. Do not confuse with avorio (ivory), its traditional decorative pairing.
