Usage Note
Fidanzata can mean both a girlfriend in a serious relationship and a fiancée — Italian does not always distinguish the two as sharply as English. The male counterpart is fidanzato. Essere fidanzati ('to be engaged/going out together') covers both steady dating and formal engagement; context clarifies. The verb fidanzarsi means 'to get engaged' or 'to start going out'.
Examples
"Ha presentato la sua fidanzata alla famiglia."
Natural Translation
He introduced his girlfriend to his family.
