fritto

fried

adjective FREET-toh Rare

Also means

done for

Usage Note

Fritto is the past participle of friggere ('to fry') used as an adjective: pesce fritto = 'fried fish'. Colloquially, sei fritto means 'you're done for / finished', an idiomatic extension comparing one's fate to food dropped in hot oil. Fritto misto is a classic mixed-fry dish (seafood or vegetables). Do not confuse with arrosto ('roasted') or grigliato ('grilled').

Examples

"Preferisco il pesce fritto alla griglia."

Natural Translation

I prefer fried fish to grilled fish.
