lanciare
throw
verb lahn-CHAH-reh Less Common
Origin: from Latin 'lanceare', to wield a lance
Also means
launch
Usage Note
Lanciare drops the 'i' before endings starting with 'e' or 'i', so you write lanci not 'lancii'. Beyond physical throwing it means to launch a product, campaign or appeal: lanciare un prodotto. The reflexive lanciarsi means to hurl oneself or plunge into something.
Examples
"Lancia la palla al cane."
Natural Translation
He throws the ball to the dog.
Literal Translation
Throws the ball to-the dog.
