Mancato is the past participle of mancare used adjectivally to mean 'failed' or 'would-be', as in un colpo mancato ('a missed shot') or un artista mancato ('a failed/would-be artist'). It agrees in gender and number: mancata, mancati, mancate. Don't confuse with mancante, which means 'missing'.
