Usage Note

Mascherare means both to put a mask on someone and, figuratively, to hide or conceal something: mascherare la verità (to mask the truth). The reflexive mascherarsi means 'to disguise oneself' or 'to dress up' at carnival. La maschera is the noun (mask). Takes avere as its auxiliary in its non-reflexive form.
