metal

heavy metal

noun MEH-tahl Rare

Origin: English loanword.

Also means

metal music genre

Usage Note

Metal is an invariable English borrowing used in Italian exclusively for the music genre and its subgenres (metal estremo, metal progressivo). It does not replace the Italian word metallo for the material. The word is masculine (il metal) and its plural is identical to the singular, as is standard for English loanwords in Italian ending in a consonant.

Examples

"Ama il metal fin dall'adolescenza."

Natural Translation

He has loved metal music since adolescence.
