Usage Note

Minoranza is the opposite of maggioranza ('majority') and turns up in both political and statistical contexts. The fixed phrase essere in minoranza means 'to be outnumbered' or 'in the minority'. It also names ethnic or linguistic groups, as in una minoranza linguistica.
