niente

nothing

pronoun NYEHN-teh Less Common

Also means

anything

Usage Note

Niente triggers double negation: with a verb you must say non...niente, as in non vedo niente ('I see nothing'). On its own it answers a thank-you as di niente ('you're welcome') and casually means 'no big deal'.

Examples

"Non ho capito niente."

Natural Translation

I understood nothing.

Literal Translation

Not I-have understood nothing.
