Origin: From French passeport (pass + port/gate), adopted into Italian in the 16th century.

Usage Note

Passaporto is always masculine (il passaporto). Common phrases include rinnovare il passaporto (to renew the passport) and controllo passaporti (passport control). Note that within the Schengen Area, EU citizens can travel with just la carta d'identità (identity card) instead.
