Usage Note

Raffreddare means to lower the temperature of something (raffreddare il motore = to cool the engine). The reflexive raffreddarsi means 'to cool down' (of a person, thing, or relationship) and also 'to catch a cold' (mi sono raffreddato = I caught a cold). Note il raffreddore (a cold, the illness) — a deceptive false friend: raffreddore is not 'a cooler' but 'a head cold'.
