Ricognizione has a military sense of scouting or surveying territory (volo di ricognizione, reconnaissance flight). In legal Italian it also means the formal recognition or identification of a document or fact (ricognizione di debito). The -gn- spelling comes from the Latin root cognoscere (to know, recognise).
