ritardato

delayed

adjective ree-tar-DAH-toh Rare

Also means

slow

Usage Note

Ritardato literally means 'delayed' (a train, payment, development). Used medically it can mean 'delayed' in development. Note that in informal Italian it is also used as a very offensive insult; learners should be aware of this double register and use in ritardo ('late/delayed') when referring to schedules to avoid ambiguity.

Examples

"Il treno è ritardato di venti minuti."

Natural Translation

The train is delayed by twenty minutes.
