rosa

rose

noun adjective ROH-zah Less Common

Origin: from Latin rosa

Also means

pink

Usage Note

Rosa is the noun 'rose' (feminine, plural rose) but also the colour 'pink', and as a colour adjective it is invariable: due maglie rosa ('two pink shirts'), never rose. It also names a sports team's squad list (la rosa della squadra). Note the false friend: pink is rosa, not the English 'rose'.

Examples

"Ti ho regalato una rosa rossa."

Natural Translation

I gave you a red rose.

Literal Translation

To-you I-have gifted a rose red.
