Usage Note

Sacro applies to places, objects, or concepts considered holy (il Sacro Romano Impero = the Holy Roman Empire, musica sacra = sacred music). In colloquial use it can be hyperbolic: il sonno è sacro (sleep is sacred). The antonym is profano (profane). Do not confuse sacro with santosanto is used directly before a proper name (San Pietro, Santa Maria).
