Usage Note
Sorprendentemente is a long adverb formed from sorprendente (surprising) + -mente. Italian adverbs ending in -mente are formed from the feminine adjective form; since sorprendente ends in -e (epicene), the -mente attaches directly. These long adverbs are common in written Italian but in speech are often replaced by in modo sorprendente.
