Verticale describes anything perpendicular to the horizon. As a feminine noun la verticale it means a handstand in gymnastics (fare la verticale = 'to do a handstand'). The word is invariable for gender — un muro verticale, una linea verticale — only the plural changes: verticali. Opposite: orizzontale.
