vigna

vineyard

noun VEE-nyah Rare

Origin: Latin vinea, from vinum (wine)

Usage Note

Vigna refers to a planted vineyard — the plot of land with growing vines. It overlaps with vigneto, which is the more technical agricultural term for the same thing. Vigna also appears in many Italian place names and family names. Do not confuse with vino (wine) or vite (grapevine, the plant itself).

Examples

"La vigna produce uve eccellenti ogni anno."

Natural Translation

The vineyard produces excellent grapes every year.
