Vinto is the past participle of vincere ('to win/defeat') used as a noun meaning the defeated party — il vinto ('the loser', in a contest or war). The seed POS lists it as a noun, which is valid in this usage; however it is also very common as an adjective meaning 'defeated, won'. Plural: i vinti. The famous novel I vinti by Verga comes from this word. Do not confuse vinto (defeated) with vincitore (the winner, actively named).
