agonistico
competitive, agonistic
adjective ah-goh-NEE-stee-koh Rare
Origin: Greek agonistikos (of contest), from agon (contest)
Usage Note
Agonistico describes anything related to competitive sport or contest — attività agonistica means competitive sporting activity (as opposed to recreational). It is a false friend for English speakers: it does NOT mean 'agonizing' (which is angoscioso or straziante). The noun is agonismo.
Examples
"Ha smesso di praticare nuoto agonistico."
Natural Translation
She stopped competing in competitive swimming.
