Origin: Apocope of 'ancora', from Latin 'hanc horam' (at this hour).

Usage Note

Ancor is the apocopated (shortened) form of ancora, used almost exclusively in poetry, song, and elevated literary prose when the following word begins with a consonant or for metrical reasons: ancor più ('still more'), ancor vivo ('still alive'). In ordinary conversation and prose, ancora is always preferred. Learners encountering ancor in Italian literature or lyrics should simply read it as ancora.
