anzi

rather

adverb AHN-tsee Less Common

Origin: from Latin ante

Also means

Usage Note

Anzi corrects or strengthens what was just said, meaning 'rather' or 'in fact, even more so'. After a negative it reverses it entirely: non mi dispiace, anzi! ('I don't mind, quite the opposite!').

Examples

Natural Translation

It's not bad, on the contrary it's gorgeous.

Literal Translation

Not is ugly, rather is very-beautiful.
