buttare

to throw; to toss

verb boot-TAH-reh Less Common

Also means

to discard, to throw away

Usage Note

Buttare takes avere. The reflexive buttarsi means 'to throw oneself into' something — buttarsi in un progetto (to dive into a project) — and colloquially 'to fling oneself'. Buttare via specifically means 'to throw away, to discard'. In informal speech buttare is far more common than the formal gettare or lanciare for 'to throw'.

Examples

"Ho buttato via i vecchi giornali."

Natural Translation

I threw away the old newspapers.

Literal Translation

I-have thrown away the old newspapers.
