Usage Note
Centrocampo is a football compound (centro + campo) for the midfield area or the centre circle of a pitch. The players who play there are centrocampisti (midfielders). It is invariable in some uses (il centrocampo, always singular when referring to the zone), but i centrocampi exists when referring to multiple pitches' midfield sections. The word is almost exclusively a football term.
