Centrocampista is the football (soccer) term for a midfielder — a player in the centrocampo (midfield). Like all nouns ending in -ista, it has a common form for singular regardless of the player's gender, but the plural changes by gender: i centrocampisti (male or mixed) vs le centrocampiste (female). It is a compound of centro (centre) + campo (field) + the agentive suffix -ista.
