diligenza

diligence; stagecoach

noun dee-lee-JEN-tsah Rare

Origin: Latin diligentia, 'carefulness'

Usage Note

Diligenza primarily means 'diligence, conscientiousness, hard work' — a quality valued in school and professional contexts (lavorare con diligenza, 'to work diligently'). As a historical curiosity, it also denotes the horse-drawn stagecoach (la diligenza del West, 'the Wild West stagecoach'), borrowed from French diligence. The two meanings are always clear from context. The plural is regular: diligenze.

Examples

"Ha completato il lavoro con grande diligenza."

Natural Translation

She completed the work with great diligence.
