Usage Note

Esule functions both as a noun (an exile, an expatriate forced to leave their homeland) and as an adjective (exiled). It carries a literary or political weight; the everyday word for someone living abroad is emigrante or espatriato. The plural is esuli. A famous example: gli esuli istriani (the Istrian exiles after WWII).
