filtro

filter

noun FEEL-troh Rare

Origin: From Medieval Latin filtrum, of Germanic origin.

Usage Note

Filtro covers both physical filters (coffee filter, air filter: filtro del caffè, filtro dell'aria) and figurative ones (a filter that selects or limits information). It also appears in the phrase filtro solare (sunscreen, literally 'solar filter'). The verb is filtrare (to filter). Note that filtro (m) is not related to feltro (m), which means felt fabric.
