freddo

cold

adjective FREHD-doh Less Common

Also means

coldness

Usage Note

Freddo is the false friend's opposite: it means 'cold', whereas caldo means 'hot'. As a noun il freddo is 'the cold', and crucially Italians say ho freddo ('I am cold', literally 'I have cold'), never sono freddo, which implies an aloof personality.

Examples

"L'acqua è troppo fredda."

Natural Translation

The water is too cold.

Literal Translation

The-water is too cold.
