Usage Note

Gnà is a Southern Italian and Sicilian dialectal honorific, a contracted form of donna, used as a title of respect before a woman's name: gnà Rosa. It appears frequently in classic Sicilian literature, notably in Giovanni Verga's works. It is not used in standard Italian and sounds archaic or very regional today. The masculine counterpart is gnò (from don).
