Mensola is a wall-mounted shelf or supporting bracket. It is the standard word for an individual shelf attached to a wall, as opposed to scaffale (a freestanding shelving unit with multiple levels). Mensola del camino is a mantelpiece. The word is also used in architecture for a corbel or projecting bracket supporting a structure above.
