Usage Note
Pagare takes avere as its auxiliary in compound tenses: ho pagato. When it means 'to treat someone', it takes an indirect object: ti pago un caffè ('I'll buy you a coffee'). Note that pagare governs a direct object for the amount: pago dieci euro, not pago per dieci euro.
