perigeo

perigee

noun peh-ree-JEH-oh Rare

Origin: From Greek 'peri' (near) + 'gê' (earth).

Usage Note

Perigeo is the point in an orbit (of the Moon, a satellite, or spacecraft) closest to Earth — the opposite of apogeo. It is a masculine noun. Learners of science or astronomy Italian will meet it in discussions of lunar phases and satellite orbits; a superluna (supermoon) occurs when the full moon coincides with il perigeo.

Examples

"La Luna è al perigeo questa settimana."

Natural Translation

The Moon is at perigee this week.
