promesso

promised

adjective proh-MES-soh Rare

Also means

engaged (to be married)

Usage Note

Promesso is the past participle of promettere used as an adjective. The phrase promesso sposo / promessa sposa means 'fiancé / fiancée' — made famous by Manzoni's novel I Promessi Sposi. Do not confuse with promosso (promoted/passed an exam), which sounds similar.

Examples

"Ha mantenuto la parola promessa."

Natural Translation

He kept his promised word.
