ultrà

ultras; hardcore fan

noun ool-TRAH Rare

Origin: Italian adaptation of French/Latin ultra (beyond).

Usage Note

Ultrà (always written with an accent) refers to a member of an organised, passionately devoted — and often rowdy — football supporters' group. Unlike English 'ultras', the Italian term is strongly associated with the organised fan-curve (curva) culture and can carry connotations of hooliganism. It is invariable: un ultrà, gli ultrà. The accent distinguishes it from the prefix ultra-.

Examples

"Gli ultrà hanno animato la curva per tutto il match."

Natural Translation

The ultras animated the stand throughout the match.
