corridore

runner

noun kor-ree-DOH-reh Rare

Also means

racing cyclist

Usage Note

Corridore can mean an athletic runner or, very commonly in Italian sports culture, a competitive cyclist. Italy's passion for cycling (the Giro d'Italia) makes the cycling sense extremely frequent. Do not confuse with corridoio ('corridor, hallway'), which shares the root but has a completely different meaning. The feminine form is corritrice; the plural is corridori.

Examples

"Il corridore ha vinto la tappa di montagna."

Natural Translation

The rider won the mountain stage.
